Gods will for a nations leader E-mail
Written by Jonathan

Concerning elections I have heard people say that God is in control and whoever gets into office that must be Gods Will in the matter. I don't believe that is true or Scriptural.

I know a whole lot of you out there just had a conniption because I am questioning the "sovereignty of God". Let me be clear, I believe that God is ultimately in control, and He is still on the throne of the universe and all that exists. I also believe that religious people use the "sovereignty of God" as an excuse for not being the men and women of faith and righteousness that God has called us to be.

It is in fact human nature as fallen sinful people to blame someone else when things go wrong. Very rarely do we see people truly take responsibility for their own actions. When was the last time you saw someone take the heat for a decision they made or action they took? The better question is when was the last time you owned up to a mistake, bad decision, or foolish action that YOU were responsible for?

I have been talking to God about this lately and I caught myself doing the same old thing of keeping my mouth shut and letting someone else take the blame for something I did. Later God brought the incident back to me and said very clearly... "Well at least you admit you did that. Now lets work on not doing that again." Believe me that was a hard thing, but at the same time an undeniable fact. I made a choice to not take the heat (even though it was a totally minor and inconsequential thing) and play dumb.

Now back to this leader of a nation thing. I have heard that God will put in office whoever He wants in office so all we have to do is pray that cop out prayer of, "God, whatever your will is, let it be done." That is one of the wimpiest, weakest, most take no action, faithless, take no time to find Gods will prayers you can possibly pray. Did I just insult you? Did I offend you? Then I hit a nerve.

The simplest fact is this. God has a plan but it is up to us to carry out His work in this world. God works and moves in this world through us. When was the last time you saw a person get saved without the Gospel being preached, or a testimony given? If you don't lie the only answer is never. Our entire relationship with God is based on one thing... free will. This entire world is built around our ability to have and operate in free will. Free will is the reason bad people can do bad things to good people. Free will is the reason we can choose whether or not we accept Gods love or reject it. Free will is the reason we can have a real and intimate relationship with the God of the Universe.

Its free will which brings us back around to the leader of a nation and Gods will in the matter. Do you know why our republic form of government is the greatest form of government that will ever exist in this fallen world? Because our founding Fathers either directly or indirectly understood what free will is and how it works. Our government is run by the free will of its people. Consequently as the people of this country goes so goes the government of this country.

Now let me lay out a scriptural foundation for what I just said. In 1 Samuel 8 we see that the nation of Israel declared they were no longer happy with the system of government God had established for them. They told Samuel that they wanted a king like all the other nations had. Samuel was not happy about this so he went to God and this is what God said:

“Do everything they say to you,” the Lord replied, “for it is me they are rejecting, not you. They don’t want me to be their king any longer. Do as they ask, but solemnly warn them about the way a king will reign over them." 1 Samuel 8:7,9 NLT

It wasn't Gods will for Israel to have a king, but He gave the people what they wanted, Israel made a free will decision to reject God and be ruled by a man. As you read on you see that God even sent Samuel to warn the people about the repercussions of the choice they were making:

So Samuel passed on the Lord’s warning to the people who were asking him for a king. “This is how a king will reign over you,” Samuel said. “The king will draft your sons and assign them to his chariots and his charioteers, making them run before his chariots. Some will be generals and captains in his army, some will be forced to plow in his fields and harvest his crops, and some will make his weapons and chariot equipment. The king will take your daughters from you and force them to cook and bake and make perfumes for him. He will take away the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his own officials. He will take a tenth of your grain and your grape harvest and distribute it among his officers and attendants. He will take your male and female slaves and demand the finest of your cattle and donkeys for his own use. He will demand a tenth of your flocks, and you will be his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will beg for relief from this king you are demanding, but then the Lord will not help you.”

But the people refused to listen to Samuel’s warning. “Even so, we still want a king,” they said. “We want to be like the nations around us. Our king will judge us and lead us into battle.”

So Samuel repeated to the Lord what the people had said, 22 and the Lord replied, “Do as they say, and give them a king.” 1 Samuel 8:10-22

God and Samuel warned the people what would happen if they chose to have a king and reject God. So yes, it is possible for the leader of a nation to selected, "elected" and it not be Gods will.

We as Christians are responsible for our actions or inactions. The Church in this country has been called to Righteousness in everything we do. That includes how we vote and who we vote for. As a Christian it is your responsibility to vote for righteousness according to Gods standards and NOT for change, the economy, social agenda, history making moment, or anything else. Every candidate promises change so that is nothing new, its just the same old line of crap we have been handed for years. If your voting your pocket book then you aren't trusting God and you probably need to start tithing. If abortion doesn't bother you then you do not know the heart of our Father. If you think its a historical thing, just remember that our nation defines history everyday.

If you chose to vote for anything other than righteousness in this recent election, I will not question your salvation because that is between you and God, but I will question whether or not you truly have a relationship with God. I will question whether you really are a "Christian" or not, and I will do this based on the fruit of your actions.

Its time the Church stopped hiding behind political correctness and "the sovereignty of God" and started taking responsibility for our own actions. Its time we start being the beacon of righteousness, the city on a hill that can not be hid (cause we seem to be doing a great job of hiding right now), that has called us to be.

Well there it is. We will have to deal with the choices that have been made. It's time we start praying for Wisdom, Integrity, and Justice to be demonstrated in our leaders. It's time to lift them up before God and pray protection over them. It's time to start praying for Righteousness to be returned to Washington.

For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12

Prayer is our greatest weapon and free will is the power behind that weapon. Will you stand and be counted as a righteous man or woman of God?
